I worked in the Recruitment Industry for over 16 years and working in the corporate world taught me how I had to conduct myself to fit in and be accepted and how I needed to come across to be heard and successful. 

My parents had always told me that I would have to work 3 times harder than others to get ahead and I was taught to keep my head down and work hard. It had its rewards; however, I was never my true funny, witty and confident self when it came to fitting into the corporate world.   

I always had the thought in the back of my mind that because of the colour of my skin, I had to set a good example, I couldn’t let others think that black people didn’t work hard or that they didn’t belong in offices or deserve to wear a suit and tie to work every day. 

It was during my time with Amey Plc that I realised that I could be my true self at work without feeling judged.  I was the Chair of the Multicultural Network Affinity group for Amey and it was there that I found my voice and identity.

I was supported by the leaders including Michael Burgess, Chief People Officer & Amanda Fisher the then CEO to be the real Kelvin Campbell and not the corporate persona that I had been during my many years as a professional.

Amey listened to its multicultural and diverse employees and made us feel equal and included.  I began to speak up without fear and share my ideas and my thoughts, which were listened to and respected this made me feel like I could achieve anything.

My awakening meant that I was able to help other diverse employees gain their confidence and voice and it’s helping others that motivated me to set up The Diversity Advocates.  I want to help businesses to create a diverse & inclusive workforce where their employees are happy to embrace their uniqueness and show their true personality in the workplace.

When the workforce can be themselves a company will increase productivity, boost creativity, innovation and revenue.
